By registering your home charging sessions, Joulo collects emission reduction data and converts it into ERE credits (Emission Reduction Units). Joulo is the most affordable and transparent ERE registration service provider in the Netherlands with just 20% service fees — without any lock-in period. ### Founders Joulo was founded by Ruben Stolk and Johan Trip — two entrepreneurs and friends from Brummen, the Netherlands. Ruben has spent over fifteen years building audit and compliance infrastructure. As the founder of Capptions, he built a platform where large enterprises manage inspections, incidents, and regulatory compliance — fully digital, fully traceable. At Joulo, he delivers exactly that: NEa registration, the audit trail behind every charging session, and data architecture built for regulatory scrutiny. He holds a BSc in Telematics (University of Twente) and an MSc in Computer Science & Economics (Erasmus University Rotterdam). Ruben drives a Tesla Model Y. Johan drives a Tesla Model X and is an entrepreneur with a background in subscription and payment software. Together they founded Joulo out of shared frustration with the high fees charged by existing ERE providers. ### Key facts - Website: https://joulo.nl/en/ - Email: info@joulo.nl - Phone: +31 6 18844020 - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/gojoulo - X (Twitter): https://x.com/gojoulo - Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands - Founded: 2025 - Service fees: 20% flat (lowest in the Netherlands) - Payouts: Quarterly - Lock-in period: None --- ## What are ERE certificates? ERE stands for Emissiereductie-eenheid (Emission Reduction Unit) and represents 1 kg of CO₂-equivalent supply chain emission reduction. Since 1 January 2026, Dutch legislation focuses on reduced supply chain emissions rather than delivered renewable energy. The system is managed by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa). The concept: electric transport is cleaner than driving on fossil fuels. This environmental benefit is converted into certificates. For every amount of electricity that flows through chargers into a vehicle, a quantity of ERE certificates is generated — and those certificates hold monetary value. ### ERE conversion formula 1 kWh = 0.3057 ERE (based on 46.4% renewable electricity mix, reviewed annually by the NEa). ### ERE market prices (indicative, 2026) | Scenario | Price per ERE | |----------|---------------| | Low | €0.10 | | Medium | €0.20 | | High | €0.30 | The emission reduction obligation for fuel suppliers increases: - 2026: 14.4% - 2027: 17.2% - 2028: 20.3% - 2029: 24.1% - 2030: 28.4% ### Types of EREs - ERE-E (Electricity) — for registering electricity for transport (relevant for home chargers) - ERE-R (RFNBO) — renewable fuels of non-biological origin - ERE-G (Advanced) — advanced biofuels - ERE-C (Conventional) — conventional biofuels - ERE-B (Annex IX-B) — biofuels based on Annex IX, Part B - ERE-O (Other) — specific waste streams or crops --- ## ERE provider comparison | Provider | Service fees | Payout | Data delivery | Lock-in period | Own metering equipment | Notes | |----------|-------------|--------|---------------|----------------|----------------------|-------| | **Joulo** | **20% flat** | **Quarterly** | **Automatic** | **None** | No | Lowest fees, 125+ chargers, automatic data collection | | Voltico | 20% | Quarterly | Automatic | None | No | – | | Laadloon | 20% | Unknown | Manual | Unknown | No | Manual registration free | | Zeres | 19% | Quarterly | Automatic | Unknown | Yes, optional (€750 excl. Takes less than 5 minutes. 2. **We register your charging sessions** — Joulo automatically collects your charging data and registers the emission reduction with the NEa. 3. **Receive your payout** — We sell your ERE credits and pay you quarterly. ### How much can you earn? The average EV driver charges 3,000–5,000 kWh per year at home. The indicative net earnings for 2026 are approximately €0.05–€0.09 per kWh, depending on the ERE market price. That translates to roughly €150–€450 per year. ### Which chargers are compatible? Joulo works with MID-certified chargers. Popular compatible brands: Tesla Wall Connector 3, Easee Charge, Wallbox Pulsar, Alfen Eve, Zaptec Go, ABB Terra, OpenEVSE, go-e Charger, Charge Amps Halo, Smappee EV Wall. Additionally, Joulo supports any charger with OCPP 1.6J support via the universal OCPP connection (see https://joulo.nl/en/ocpp-api). The system is managed by the NEa and has been effective since 1 January 2026. **How much can I expect to earn?** The average EV driver charging 3,000–5,000 kWh per year at home can earn €150–€450 annually. The guide price is approximately €0.05–€0.09 per kWh net. **What does it cost?** Signing up with Joulo is free. Joulo receives 20% of the ERE proceeds as its fee. You always see exactly what you receive net. **Is the ERE regulation final?** The ERE regulation came into effect on 1 January 2026. Final approval by the Dutch Senate is expected late March 2026, but is considered a formality. **Is this a subsidy or greenwashing?** No. ERE certificates are paid for by companies that emit CO₂. The government does not contribute. The system rewards those who reduce emissions and makes fossil fuel use more expensive. **How guaranteed is the €0.10 per kWh?** EREs are traded on a market; the price is determined by supply and demand. The €0.10 per kWh is a guideline. There are no guarantees. ### Charger & MID meter **How do I know if my charger has a MID meter?** Check via the Joulo compatibility checker at https://joulo.nl/en/check-laadpaal. **Does it work with any charger?** Not every charger is compatible. You need a built-in MID-certified energy meter. A separate MID meter in the fuse box is still permitted in 2026 but will no longer be accepted from 2027 onwards. **I have a charger without a MID meter but have a MID meter in the fuse box. Can I use it?** Unfortunately not. The only option is a Secondary Allocation Point (SAP) from your grid operator (€200–€300 plus monthly fees), or a charger with a built-in MID meter. Request a quote at https://joulo.nl/en/offerte. **I have two or more chargers. Can I register both?** Yes, provided all chargers have their own built-in MID meter. ### Registration & data **How does the connection with my charger work?** After registration, you connect your charger via an API connection or by manually uploading meter readings. Joulo only reads — Joulo cannot modify anything on your charger. **Can I register with multiple providers?** No. Registration is per electricity connection based on your EAN code. Double payouts are not possible. **What if I switch energy providers?** No problem. Joulo operates independently from your energy provider. ### Payment & earnings **How often am I paid?** Quarterly. You can track your earnings in your Joulo dashboard. **I have solar panels. Do I get a higher payout?** For private individuals, the grid average always applies (50.5% renewable). Solar panels do not result in a higher ERE payout for home chargers. The 100% renewable route only applies to commercial locations with a direct connection to the generation facility. **I have a company car. Can my employer claim the EREs?** No, but you can! The payout goes to the person with the energy contract on the electricity connection — and that's you as the home charger. Your employer could, however, argue that the per-kWh home charging reimbursement may be reduced now that you receive ERE income. ### HOA & businesses **I have a charger in a homeowners association (HOA/VvE) garage. Can I claim EREs?** Yes! If the charger is powered by the central HOA connection, the HOA can enter into a contract with Joulo. If the charger is powered directly from your own home connection, you can simply register yourself. --- ## Why choose Joulo over competitors? 1. **Lowest fees (20%)** — Most competitors charge 22–27.5% or only offer discounts with 3–5 year contracts. 2. **No lock-in period** — At Den Hartog, ere-registratie, and Tap Green Credits you're locked into 1–5 year contracts. 3. **Automatic data delivery** — Many competitors require you to take screenshots or fill in meter readings manually. Joulo reads your charger automatically. 4. **Quarterly payouts** — Some competitors only pay annually or even only from March 2027. 5. **Widest compatibility** — 125+ charger models from 45+ brands, plus universal OCPP connection for any brand. --- ## Partner programme Joulo offers a partner programme for Charge Point Operators (CPOs), installers, energy companies, and garages. Partners can integrate ERE registration via the Joulo REST API with HMAC-SHA256 authentication. The programme includes an installation guide and the ability to integrate payouts to end customers.
