What are ERE credits?
ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit and represents 1 kg CO₂-equivalent chain emission reduction. Managed by the NEa since 1 January 2026.
ERE credits (Emission Reduction Units) replaced HBEs (Renewable Fuel Units). Since 1 January 2026 Dutch regulation targets chain emission reductions rather than delivered renewable energy.
One ERE represents 1 kg CO₂eq emission reduction in the chain compared to the fossil reference. The system is managed by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa).
The idea is simple: electric mobility is cleaner than running on fossil fuels. That environmental gain is converted into credits. For every batch of electricity that goes into a car via a charger, a quantity of ERE credits is created • and those credits represent monetary value.
Who can participate?
Companies, homeowner associations and home chargers with their own charger can all participate, as long as they meet the requirements. The key requirement: a built-in MID-certified meter in your charger.
Who pays for ERE credits?
Oil companies. They must demonstrate a legally required share of emission reduction for every liter of fuel • which they can do by buying ERE credits from parties like you.
Conversion from HBE
At the conversion on 1 May 2026, each HBE is converted into 46 ERE.
