1 ERE = 1 kg CO₂-equivalent chain-emission reduction
An Emission Reduction Unit is a tradable proof that CO₂ was saved somewhere in the transport chain. Not every ERE is the same: they are grouped by sector (road, sea, inland shipping) and source (biofuel, electricity). 11 ticket types in total. Read the basics.
Ticket types
Not every ERE is equal
S&P Global Platts has assessed nine ticket types since November 1, 2025. LRE-E (electric road transport) is traded separately • this is the ERE that Joulo registers for you.

Demand side
Who buys ERE's
Under RED III, fuel suppliers must prove that a growing share of their sales is renewable. Anyone falling short tops up by buying EREs.
Fuel suppliers
Oil and gas companies, terminal operators and blenders. Mandated under the Dutch Environmental Management Act • Regulation on energy for transport.
Bunker suppliers & shipping companies
Maritime suppliers and inland-shipping operators with their own RED III obligation for shipping.
Trading desks
Energy traders and commodity-trading desks holding positions on behalf of compliance clients.
Rising mandate
Renewable obligation grows from 14.4% (2026) to 28.4% (2030). Demand for EREs grows with it.
Supply side
Who sells ERE's
Anyone proving emission reductions and registered as an inboekdienstverlener with the NEa. The official register currently holds a few dozen parties.
Aggregators of charging sessions (LRE-E)
Registered service providers like Joulo bundle thousands of home-charging connections into tradable lots. A single driver yields around 700 kg CO₂e per year • a tradable lot is 1 million kg or more.
Biofuel producers (LRE-A/B/C/O)
Production facilities for advanced biofuels (Annex IX-A), UCO derivatives (Annex IX-B), conventional biofuels and other residues.
Maritime & inland-shipping operators (ZRE/BRE)
Shipping companies and bunker suppliers achieving emission reductions in their own fleet or for clients through biofuels, methanol or LBG.
Market infrastructure
No exchange • but an ecosystem
Trading happens OTC between buyer and seller, often through a broker. The following ecosystem makes the market work.
NEa register
Official ledger of registrations and transfers. Every traded ERE moves through a transfer record in the NEa system. Joulo B.V. has been on the official list of registered service providers since 2 February 2026.
S&P Global Platts
Has published daily price assessments for nine ERE ticket types since 1 November 2025. London 16:30 close, in euros per kg of CO₂ equivalent. Vintages: current-year (Jan–Dec), previous-year (Jan–Apr of the following year), next-year (Nov–Dec). Source.
Brokers
Including SFI Green Markets. Brokers connect supply and demand, publish weekly market updates and facilitate bilateral transactions.
Traders
Trading desks at energy companies handle ERE volumes alongside their existing fuel and power positions. Example: Eneco Trade, which holds RED III credits next to gas and electricity for compliance purposes of its own clients and third parties.
Independent verifiers
Audit of the underlying emission reduction. Joulo partners with Capptions for the audit trail.

Standard transaction terms
Lot size 1–3 million kg CO₂e • payment and transfer in Q1 of the following year • vintage must match the agreed delivery. Volumes outside this range are normalised to the base.

Your ~700 kg CO₂e per year is bundled with that of thousands of other drivers into lots of 1 million kg or more • that way we fit the standard market.

We benchmark against Platts and competing broker offers. No fixed price • we sell when the market is strongest within the transfer window.
Quarterly payout
Proceeds paid into your account every quarter • net of service fees. From 10% via referrals (20% standard). Cancel annually.
