EU Data Act

What we do with your charger's data

The European Data Act gives you a right to the data of your charger. You may view it, download it and share it with anyone you choose. This page sets out which data we receive, what we do with it and how you get to it. Read it before you connect your charger.

Version: 27 September 2026

Your rights in short

  • You know which data we collect before you connect.
  • You get free access to your own data: in your dashboard, as a download or through the API.
  • You may share your data with any party you choose, including another ERE service provider.
  • If we do not keep to this, you can file a complaint with the ACM.

Per connection: which data, and who the data holder is

The Data Act calls the party that manages the data of a device the data holder. That role differs per connection. With OCPP your charger talks to us directly, so we are the data holder. With a cloud connection the manufacturer is the data holder, and we fetch the data with your permission.

Connecting through OCPP

Joulo is the data holder
Which data
Charging sessions: start and end time, meter reading at start and stop in Wh, and the card or ID that started the session. Meter values while charging. The status of each connector and error messages. Data about the charger itself: brand, model, serial number, firmware version and settings. We make passwords and WiFi keys in those settings unreadable in our database.
How often and how much
Continuously, while your charger is connected. While charging, it usually sends a meter reading every minute. Otherwise it sends a message on every status change and a regular sign of life. Our estimate: a few thousand messages per month, a few megabytes in total.
Where and for how long
Charging sessions and meter readings sit in our database at Supabase. We also keep every raw message to and from your charger in an archive at Cloudflare, as evidence for questions or disputes. We delete those raw messages seven years after the day they were sent. Data that supports a registered ERE is kept for at least five years after the year of registration, because the NEa requires it. Otherwise we keep your data while you are a customer and seven years after that (statutory retention).
What we do with it
Register your charging sessions with the NEa and pay out your revenue. Show your sessions in your dashboard and the app. Start and stop charging when you ask. Find and fix faults. We also produce anonymised statistics in which you and your charger cannot be identified.
Who we share it with
The NEa, for the registration. The independent verifier who audits our registrations. The partner you signed up through, as far as the partner fee needs it. And any app or service you give access yourself. We never sell your data.
How you get to it
Directly: your charging sessions and meter readings are in your dashboard and the app. Download them as CSV or PDF per charger, or fetch them with your personal API token. You get the raw messages from the archive on request: send us a message.

Connecting through the manufacturer's cloud

The manufacturer is the data holder
Which data
Charging sessions: start and end time and kWh, and for most brands the meter readings. Brand, model and serial number of your charger. Whether the connection still works.
How often and how much
We fetch new charging sessions from the manufacturer every 15 minutes. Each session is one row with a few fields.
Where and for how long
In our database at Supabase, with the same retention as for OCPP. We store the login details or access key for your connection encrypted.
What we do with it
The same as for OCPP: registration, payout, showing it in your dashboard and finding faults.
Who we share it with
The same parties as for OCPP. The manufacturer sees that we fetch data on your behalf.
How you get to it
What we fetch is in your dashboard; download it as CSV or PDF, or fetch it through the API. For all the data the manufacturer holds on your charger, ask the manufacturer. Our page on data access per brand shows which brands handle that well.

The dashboard and the app

Joulo is the data holder
Which data
The data your use of our service creates: your settings per charger, such as who may charge and whether you share your charger, your charging cards, your payouts and your messages to us. From the app also your sign-ins and, if you turn on notifications, the address your phone receives them on.
What we do with it
Deliver the service you ask for, and help you when you have a question.
How you get to it
You see it in your dashboard and the app. For a full copy, send us a message.

How to share your data with another party

You may share your data with any party you choose: an energy supplier, an installer, an app for your home battery or another ERE service provider. There are three ways, and none costs you anything.

Yourself, with your API token

Create a personal API token in your dashboard and give it to the party you choose. Revoke the token and the sharing stops at once.

Go to your API token

Through signing in with Joulo

Some apps let you sign in with your Joulo account. You first see which data the app may read, and only then give permission. Under Connected apps in your dashboard you see every app with access, and revoke it in one click.

Go to connected apps

Through us

Send us a message with the name of the party and the data you want to share. We deliver it without undue delay, in a common format and in the same quality as we hold it.

Send a message

If we refuse a request, we explain why and notify the ACM. That is only allowed in exceptional cases, for example when sharing puts the safety of your charger at risk. We may not deliver your data to the very largest online platforms, which the EU calls gatekeepers.

Term, cancellation and trade secrets

Term and cancellation
Your contract with Joulo can be cancelled yearly. The details are in our terms and conditions.
Stopping the data flow
With OCPP you stop the data flow at once by setting another backend address in your charger. With a cloud connection you revoke access at the manufacturer or in your dashboard. Sessions that no longer reach us cannot be registered.
Trade secrets
Your charger's data contains no trade secrets of Joulo. We hold nothing back on that ground.

Filing a complaint

If we cannot resolve it together, you can report it to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). The ACM supervises the Data Act, together with the Dutch Data Protection Authority for personal data. You can also go to court.

Why we do it this way

We ask every manufacturer to release your charger's data to the party you choose. So we do the same ourselves.
