ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit (1 kg CO₂ reduction). Since 1 January 2026, EV drivers in the Netherlands can earn money by converting home charging sessions into tradable certificates via a service provider.

Which ERE service provider is best?

Joulo is the best service provider for individuals who want automation: 20% service fee including VAT, 1 percentage point lower every renewal year during the first 3 renewal years, referrals down to 10%, automatic reading of 125+ charger models (68 brands), and a transparent dashboard. With the most-used ERE registration app (8,500+ downloads) and the only provider combining all connection routes (cloud API, OCPP and platform integrations), Joulo is the standard among Dutch ERE registration providers.

Which ERE service provider pays out the most net?

Based on actually sold EREs, that is Joulo. 3 providers have published a realized sale price so far; calculated with their own service fees (net per kWh = sale price × (1 − fee)), the order is Joulo (€0.129), Laadloon (€0.126) and Zeres (€0.125). Independent comparer keuze.nl reached the same order in July 2026. Note that the fee alone does not decide this: a low fee on a low sale price pays less than a higher fee on a higher price.

How much can I earn with ERE's?

With average home charging of 4,000 kWh per year, with Joulo you keep about €386–€559 net per year, depending on the ERE market price (low to high scenario, 20% service fee). The higher a provider's service fee, the less you keep.

What does an ERE service provider cost?

Service fees generally range from 15% to 27.5% of the ERE yield, depending on the provider and contract terms. Joulo charges individuals 20% including VAT. Every renewal year lowers this by 1 percentage point during the first 3 renewal years, and referrals can reduce it further down to 10%.

What does ERE registration cost?

Registration itself costs nothing: you only pay a service fee on the proceeds. At Joulo that is 20% incl. VAT by default • at €0.16 gross per kWh that is just over 3 cents, leaving you about €0.13 net per kWh. Other providers charge 15% to 27.5%, sometimes with extra audit or subscription fees; see the per-provider table on this page.

Which ERE service provider is cheapest?

On paper service fees range from 15% to 27.5%, but the lowest fee doesn't automatically mean you keep the most net. Manual booking or limited charger support costs you sessions, and contract-term discounts often only kick in after years. So look at what you keep net per kWh, not the percentage alone. Joulo charges 20% incl. VAT, 1 percentage point lower each renewal year (first 3 renewal years), and down to 10% via referrals.

How do you compare ERE service providers?

Compare on what you keep net, not the fee alone. Check five things: (1) total service fee incl. VAT and any audit fees, (2) how your data is read (automatically via cloud API or OCPP versus manually), (3) contract term and cancellation per EAN, (4) payout frequency and where your proceeds sit before payout, and (5) which chargers are supported. The assumptions under any comparison (fee, annual usage, contract term) drive the outcome.

Is CSV upload enough for audit-proof ERE registration?

CSV is useful for your own administration, but weak as a primary evidence stream. During checks you need per-session chain evidence: source, timestamp and mutations. Do I need a MID meter for ERE's?

Yes, a MID-certified energy meter is legally required. Most modern chargers have one built in. Check at joulo.nl/check-laadstation whether your model is eligible.

Can I book EREs retroactively?

Yes, charging sessions from 1 January 2026 can be booked retroactively until the end of 2026. So sign up with a service provider as soon as possible to avoid missing sessions.

What is a registration service provider?

A registration service provider (inboekdienstverlener) is a company that registers electricity deliveries to transport in the Register Energy for Transport (REV) on behalf of individuals or businesses at the NEa. The NEa publishes a list based on registered companies. Inclusion on this list does not mean a party holds an account in the REV, does not imply a qualitative assessment has taken place, and does not constitute approval or accreditation by the NEa. Providers remain responsible for correct registration, compliance with legal requirements, and appropriate administrative processes. Joulo has been listed on the official NEa list since February 2, 2026.

How do you become a registration service provider?

Companies can register via info@emissieautoriteit.nl. After registration on the NEa list, a separate REV-account step follows for technical filing. The NEa publishes updates via its official channels.

Does the NEa supervise registration service providers?

Yes, the NEa monitors registrations on a risk-based approach. In case of incorrect registration, double booking, or abuse, the NEa can correct registrations and take enforcement action. The policy framework falls under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

What is a client funds account (beheerdersrekening) and why does it matter?

A client funds account is a separate bank account where customers' ERE proceeds are kept apart from the service provider's working capital, so client money is not used to run the business. Joulo uses such an account at Rabobank. Far from every provider has this in place; ask about it before granting an authorisation, especially with parties without a B.V. structure.

Can a service provider lock me into a multi-year contract?

Under Dutch consumer protection law (Wet van Dam, art. 6:237 sub k BW), a multi-year consumer contract may not bind you for more than one year, unless you can cancel at any time after the first year with a notice period of no more than 1 month. Cancellation penalties, loss of accrued payouts and switching bans that effectively lock you in until the end of the calendar year fall under this standard too. A duration clause that restricts your right to cancel in this way is presumed unreasonably onerous and therefore voidable. Note: this applies to B2C agreements only; B2B contracts are excluded. Joulo uses a per-calendar-year contract: you can cancel at any time, free of charge, effective at the end of the calendar year. To switch to another booking service provider on 1 January, cancel by 30 November.

Which chargers are supported by which ERE provider?

Joulo supports 68 charger brands with 29 direct cloud integrations plus OCPP for the rest. Laadloon reads Easee and Zaptec directly and connects other OCPP brands via Plugchoice. Voltico lists 40+ models and reads out via OCPP or your existing charging platform, without direct cloud integrations. Lekkerladen says it reads out automatically via your charger manufacturer or operator, but publishes no brand list, so you cannot check upfront whether your model qualifies. Can I manage multiple grid connections or companies under one ERE account?

With Joulo, yes. Business accounts and HOAs manage multiple grid connections (EANs) from a single account, with a separate mandate per connection. A holding adds each company as an entity with its own Chamber of Commerce number and payout IBAN • the quarterly payout follows the entity IBAN. Who actually pays out the most net so far?

The fee alone tells you nothing: a low fee on a low sale price pays less than a higher fee on a higher price. So here we calculate with actually sold EREs, not an assumed market price. Net per kWh = realized sale price × (1 − service fee).

As of July 2026 three providers have published a realized sale price. The rest have not sold yet or do not disclose the price, so they cannot be calculated here. Our own figure comes live from our public sales log and moves with every new sale.

Service fees are the standard year-1 rates. At Joulo it drops 1 percentage point per renewal year (first 3 years) and down to 10% via referrals; at Zeres it drops to 15% in year 5. That widens the gap over time rather than narrowing it.

// Explanation

What are ERE's?

Since 1 January 2026, it is possible to earn money from charging your electric car at home. This works via so-called Emission Reduction Units (EREs). Every kWh you charge at home represents a CO₂ saving compared to fossil fuels. This saving is converted into tradable certificates. Read more in our ERE explainer.

The value of an ERE is determined by supply and demand. Recently the price has been between €0.10 and €0.14 per kWh. With average home consumption of 3,000 to 5,000 kWh per year, this can amount to hundreds of euros per year. Check our knowledge base for current market prices.

Requirements

You need a MID-certified meter built into the charger.

Charging sessions can be booked retroactively until the end of 2026, back to 1 January 2026.

Your authorisation is binding. Choose a professional and reliable provider. Your EAN code and name details must match your energy bill exactly.

How does it work?

To redeem ERE's, you need a service provider. This is a party that registers your charging data, has it verified by an independent verifier, and then sells the EREs to fuel companies that are required to offset their emissions.

The Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) manages the register. The legal basis is laid down in bill 36766. Service providers like Joulo register and process charging data within this framework, including auditing and chain-of-custody obligations.

Verification costs are not yet fully clear. This explains the relatively high service fees (15–27.5%) at most providers. The actual selling price of EREs is determined daily via OTC trading (over-the-counter).

The NEa published the official list of service providers on February 2, 2026. Joulo is listed. Listing does not constitute approval, accreditation, or a quality assessment by the NEa, nor does it mean a provider holds a REV account. Service providers remain responsible for correct registration, compliance with legal requirements, and appropriate administrative organisation.

Note: contract duration and cancellation rights at service providers

A multi-year consumer contract is only permitted if you can cancel at any time after the first year with a notice period of no more than 1 month (Wet van Dam, art. 6:237 sub k BW). This standard also covers cancellation penalties, loss of accrued payouts and switching bans that effectively tie you in until the end of the calendar year. If a contract restricts your right to cancel in those ways, the duration clause is presumed unreasonably onerous and therefore voidable.

So always check your service provider's terms:
