How does the registration of ERE's work?

An ERE is not a subsidy and not free money. It only exists at the end of a chain. Here you read how that chain runs, what we check, and when you see an amount.

What an ERE is

Not a subsidy, not free money

ERE stands for emission reduction unit. Fuel suppliers must cut part of their emissions every year. They can do that with cleaner fuel, or with ERE's from someone who delivered renewable energy to transport. Your home charging session is such a delivery.

So an ERE does not come from the government. It comes from a fuel supplier's obligation. And it only exists after you have charged and the registration is approved. There is no fixed amount per kWh: the price follows the market.

The NEa manages the register and puts it like this: the system is a market mechanism, not a subsidy. Read it yourself in the NEa guidance for private customers.

The chain

Five links. Only at the end is there an ERE.

An ERE exists at the end of a chain. If one link drops out, there is no ERE. Not less, but none.

  1. 01

    MID metering

Your charging station measures with a MID-certified meter fitted in the charging station at the factory. Only kWh this meter measured itself count.

  2. 02

    Mandate

You authorise us to register for your connection. That mandate applies per calendar year. Per connection only one service provider registers.

  3. 03

    Address

The charging station is at the address of the connection you authorised. We record that ourselves. You send no photo and no invoice.

  4. 04

    Verification

An independent verifier checks the file per connection every year. If it rejects a registration, there is no ERE for those sessions.

  5. 05

    Sale

We sell the ERE's to a fuel supplier. Only then is there a price on your kWh.

Only at the end of this chain is there an ERE with a price. Until then you build up. Your dashboard shows per charging station where you are in the chain.

Why we check

So your registration still holds in five years

An approved verification is not a free pass. The NEa can still correct a registration up to five years after the calendar year. So we only register what we can still defend by then. Rather one kWh less than a registration we have to take back later.

That protects your payout, and that of every other customer. One wrong registration can affect everyone's verification. So now and then we ask you something. This is what you notice of it.

Address check

You confirm once, at your charging station, that it is there. That is the proof that charging station and connection belong together.

Address on 1 January

Every year we ask whether you already lived at this address on 1 January. Your mandate applies per calendar year, so that date decides from when your sessions count.

Payout check

Before every payout we go through your sessions. A session too large for your charging station, a meter that runs backwards, a charging station on two accounts. If we doubt, we hold those sessions and ask you.

Meter readings

Sometimes we ask for a photo of the reading on your MID meter, for example when the manufacturer temporarily passes on no data. Then we only register what the meter shows.

What we do not ask: a photo of your charging station or your energy bill. They prove nothing about your address or your usage. What we need, we collect ourselves.

Your payout

Built up, traded, paid out

  1. 01Built upThe kWh your MID meter measured that meet the chain. This is not an amount yet.
  2. 02TradedWe have sold your ERE's and the price is fixed. From here we name an amount without reservation.
  3. 03Paid outThe amount is in your bank account. Every quarter, after the service fee.

Before that, every amount is an expectation based on earlier sales. The price of an ERE follows the market, and a registration can still drop out until the sale. That is why we only name an amount without reservation from traded onwards.

12.6 cents

net per kWh is what our customers received on average, over 8 sales. At the 20% service fee it is 12 cents.

Frequently asked questions

What people often think about registration

No. A photo shows no address. The NEa does not accept it as proof that your charging station is at your address. We record the address with the address check.

No. An installation report is not an NEa requirement. An installation invoice is one of the proofs of your address, but not mandatory. For many brands we take the address from your charging station ourselves.

No. A typed number, an estimate or a self-made overview is rejected by the verifier. What counts is what the MID meter measured and what your charging station reports about it. An original export from your charging station's app is fine.

No. Counting starts at the meter. If your charging station already had a MID meter on 1 January 2026, every session from that date counts, even if you sign up later.

Yes. The NEa can correct a registration up to five years after the calendar year. So we check beforehand and only register what we can still substantiate by then. That way what you built up stays yours.
