What exactly is E-Flux by Road?

E-Flux by Road is a Charge Point Operator back-office platform that powers many home and workplace chargers — including Shell Recharge, Flexicharge, NewMotion. Your charger sends charging sessions over OCPP to E-Flux for session admin, billing and public-charging roaming.

How does the Joulo integration differ from 50five?

With 50five we use a direct API: you log in with your 50five / EVC-net account and we pull sessions. With E-Flux by Road we use OCPP forwarding: your charger talks to Joulo, and we forward the sessions to E-Flux. Your existing E-Flux dashboard keeps working and Joulo registers your sessions for ERE.

Do I need to reconfigure my charger?

One setting: the OCPP / CSMS URL on your charger must point to Joulo instead of directly to E-Flux. You can change this in the E-Flux portal yourself or ask your installer. Joulo gives you the exact URL after sign-up.

Does this work for Shell Recharge / NewMotion / Flexicharge?

Yes. Shell Recharge, Flexicharge, NewMotion run on the E-Flux back-office. If your charger goes through any of those brands, the steps are the same — Joulo becomes the OCPP middle hop and forwards to E-Flux.

Do I need a MID meter?

Yes • for ERE registration the charger must have a built-in MID-certified (Eichrecht) energy meter. Joulo checks this automatically as soon as your first session arrives.

Will I lose features in my E-Flux dashboard?

No. Joulo is a passive OCPP proxy: all sessions are forwarded unchanged. Your charge card, session history and remote start/stop in E-Flux keep working as before.

What if E-Flux or Joulo is briefly down?

The OCPP proxy uses an outbox pattern: sessions are buffered locally and replayed once the connection is restored. No sessions are lost — not on Joulo's side, not on E-Flux's side.

Can I choose between E-Flux/Road and Joulo for ERE?

Yes. ERE can run elsewhere or with Joulo. The OCPP integration is for session registration only; you keep control of your ERE route. Compare fees and terms on the comparison page.

E-Flux (since the merger also known as "by Road") provides the back-office behind many home and workplace chargers. Shell Recharge, Flexicharge, NewMotion and several white-label CPOs run on the E-Flux platform for session admin, charge-card roaming and remote management.

How it works

Joulo as OCPP middleman

Instead of talking directly to E-Flux, your charger talks to Joulo. Joulo keeps a copy of each session for ERE registration and forwards the session unchanged to E-Flux. E-Flux doesn't even notice the middle hop — all existing features keep working.

One URL to change

The OCPP / CSMS URL on your charger changes from wss://ocpp.e-flux.io/... to the Joulo URL you receive after sign-up. Nothing else changes.

Transparent forwarding

Sessions in both directions (charger → backend, backend → charger) are passed through 1:1. Joulo only logs — never alters content or timing.

Automatic ERE registration

Every completed session is automatically registered as an ERE certificate at NEa. Quarterly payout to your IBAN.

Outbox on downtime

If E-Flux or Joulo is briefly unavailable, sessions are buffered and replayed once the connection is back. No lost sessions.

1. Get the Joulo URL

Create a Joulo account, pick E-Flux by Road in the connect-charger flow. You instantly receive the OCPP URL and any credentials.

2. Switch the CSMS URL

In the E-Flux portal (or via your installer) update your charger's OCPP back-end URL to the Joulo URL.

3. Earn

Sessions arrive at both Joulo and E-Flux. Joulo registers ERE credits per quarter and pays out to your IBAN.

Comparison

ERE elsewhere or via Joulo?

E-Flux itself isn't a NEa filing service — you need a separate party for ERE registration anyway. Joulo combines OCPP forwarding with direct ERE registration so you don't have to maintain two separate integrations.
