Cloud API or OCPP • which should I pick?

Both routes deliver the same ERE registration. The cloud connection automatically backfills your charging history since 1 January 2026; OCPP only delivers sessions from the moment your charger connects (earlier history can be submitted as a CSV export). OCPP needs no account link • your charger talks to Joulo directly. If you have multiple Zaptec chargers on one installation, note that OCPP applies installation-wide and disables Zaptec's own load balancing.

Does the Zaptec Go have a MID meter?

No, the original Zaptec Go (first generation, with Type 2 tethered cable and no display) does not have a built-in MID meter. Only the Zaptec Go 2 (newer model with Type 2 socket, display and 4G LTE) and the Zaptec Pro have one. For an original Go, Joulo arranges an upgrade to the Go 2 or guides you to request a Secondary Allocation Point (SAP) with your grid operator.

I have a Zaptec Pro or Go 2 • does that work too?

Yes, both Zaptec Go 2 and Zaptec Pro have a built-in MID meter and are directly supported for ERE registration.

What permissions does Joulo need in my Zaptec Portal?

Joulo needs 'owner' permissions on your Zaptec installation to read your charging sessions. We only use read access • we never change settings, and we don't start or stop your charger. See the Zaptec documentation on roles and permissions for the permission levels.

Does Joulo work with Zaptec?

Yes • Zaptec Go 2 and Zaptec Pro use a direct cloud connection via the Zaptec Portal and include a built-in MID-certified meter by default • required for ERE registration. The original Zaptec Go (first generation) does not have a built-in MID meter • for that model Joulo arranges an upgrade to the Go 2, or you request a Secondary Allocation Point (SAP) with your grid operator.

Can I connect my Zaptec via OCPP instead?

Yes • the Zaptec Go, Go 2 and Pro support a direct OCPP 1.6J connection to Joulo alongside the cloud connection. Enable it in the Zaptec Portal via Settings • Authentication • OCPP 1.6J, with wss://ocpp.joulo.nl as the URL (your Zaptec appends its own serial number). In the connect wizard, pick Zaptec and then 'Connect via OCPP 1.6'. Note: charging history from before the connection moment only comes in automatically via the cloud connection.

Connect Zaptec charger to Joulo

Can I connect my Zaptec to Joulo for ERE registration? Yes. The Zaptec Go 2 and Zaptec Pro have a built-in MID meter and connect via the Zaptec Portal API or directly via OCPP 1.6J • you pick the route in the connect wizard. The original Zaptec Go has no MID: for that, Joulo arranges an upgrade or a Secondary Allocation Point (SAP).

Start the connection

In your Joulo dashboard, select 'Connect charger' and choose Zaptec.

Log in with Zaptec Portal

Enter your Zaptec Portal credentials. Joulo needs 'owner' permissions on your installation to read your charging data. We only read sessions • we never change settings or start or stop your charger.

Choose the specific Zaptec charger you want to connect.

Confirm your MID meter

Joulo automatically verifies whether your model has a built-in MID meter. The Zaptec Go 2 and Pro do; the original Zaptec Go does not. If your charger has no MID, Joulo follows up with an upgrade quote or SAP guidance.

Done!

Sessions will now sync automatically from the Zaptec Cloud.

What happens next?

Joulo reads your sessions from the Zaptec Cloud and registers qualifying sessions as ERE's.

Alternative: connect via OCPP 1.6J

The Zaptec Go, Go 2 and Pro also support a direct OCPP 1.6J connection to Joulo, without linking your Zaptec account. Your charger then sends its sessions straight to Joulo.

In the connect wizard, choose Zaptec and then 'Connect via OCPP 1.6' • enter your charger's serial number (on the type sticker and in the Zaptec Portal).
Log in to the Zaptec Portal, open your installation and go to Settings → Authentication.
Select OCPP 1.6J as the authentication type and enter wss://ocpp.joulo.nl as the URL • nothing after it, your Zaptec appends its own serial number.
Save • your charger connects within a few minutes (green OCPP symbol in the portal) and new sessions appear in your Joulo dashboard automatically.

Requires recent firmware (Go: 2.4.2.4+, Go 2: 3.2.1.0+, Pro: 7.5.4.0+) • update via the Zaptec app if the OCPP option is missing. See also the Zaptec OCPP 1.6J configuration guide.
