Your charging data is yours. And here is how we keep it that way.

Who may access your charging sessions, and who decides? The starting point is simple: your charging data is yours. What that means for your authorisation, your EAN, and what Joulo does and does not do.

Your charging data is yours. And here is how we keep it that way.

Every charging session leaves a trace: when you charged, how many kWh, at which charge point. It used to interest no one. Now that every kWh charged at home is worth money through ERE, the question suddenly matters: who may access that data, and who decides?

Our starting point is simple. Your charging data is yours.

    It starts with your connection

Under the Energy for Transport Regulation 2026, the Emission Reduction Unit (ERE) accrues to the holder of the energy contract on the connection • your EAN. For home charging, that is you. And if the revenue from your kWh belongs to you, then the data about those kWh belongs there too. Not with the brand of your charger, not with the portal where your sessions arrive, and not with your registration provider. With you.

Since September 2025 it is also simply your right

This starting point is no longer an opinion • it is European law. The Data Act has applied since 12 September 2025 and gives you, as the user of a connected product, and a charging station is one, the right to the data that product generates about your use. You may request that data and have it forwarded to a party you choose. For personal data, that right already existed under the GDPR. In the Netherlands, the ACM supervises compliance.

For us, nothing changed that day. It was already built that way.

    Authorisation, not transfer of ownership

Joulo does not become the owner of your data. You give us an explicit, scoped authorisation to retrieve your charging sessions on your behalf. It is the same thing you could do by hand • log in, pull out your sessions • we just take that step for you. Read access, nothing more.

And you keep the key. One click in your dashboard and the authorisation stops. What we have registered for you up to that point stays yours.

What we do and do not do

    We do:

    • read only, on your authorisation
    • store per session only what is needed: start time, end time, kWh, charge-point ID, MID status
    • encrypt login details in a separate vault, not readable in our database
    • keep an audit trail, so every registered kWh is traceable for the NEa
    • show you your own retrieval and payout logs

    We do not:

    • write anything back to your charger or portal
    • sell your data or share it with third parties, other than the NEa as every registration provider is required to
    • lock you in • cancellable annually, you take with you what is yours

    Traceable down to the kWh

That it is yours is not a promise on a brochure. It is built into how the platform works. Our memory layer remembers every session in order; the control layer makes every euro explainable. For you that means: you can always see where a payout comes from, down to the session. For the NEa it means the registration holds up under verification. Honesty is not a feature we bolted on • it is the architecture.

    Your data, your control

That is what it comes down to. You decide who reads your sessions, you can stop it at any time, and you take with you what is yours. We are the layer that turns your charging sessions into income on your authorisation • not the owner of your data.

Not sure whether your charger releases your data properly? Check your charger.
