Share your EV charger with your neighbours

A home charger sits idle most of the day. More and more owners share it: with the neighbours, with family, with a visiting friend. Charging at the neighbours is allowed, and it is simpler than you think.

Am I allowed to share my charger?

Yes. The charger is on your property and you decide who is welcome. There is nothing to apply for. The Dutch government agency RVO points to charger sharing too: it creates more charging spots without extra strain on the grid. The National Charging Infrastructure Agenda reviewed sharing legally in its report 'Laden bij de buren' (2024): on your own property, at your own charger, you are fine • neighbours charging at your place periodically changes nothing.

Why you do not ask for money

Sharing used to be a sum. Whoever charged at your place used your power, and that cost you 25 cents per kWh. So a tariff followed, a payment request or a charge card.

Since 2026 that is different. Every kWh that passes your MID meter earns you an ERE credit, about 16 cents, even when it is your neighbour's car. Of those 25 cents, 9 remain. A full 12 kWh session then costs you € 1.08. On a dynamic contract, daytime power drops below 16 cents, and then you keep the difference.

Agreeing a tariff for that amount, sending a payment request and checking it every quarter costs more than it brings. Selling power also makes you a supplier. Then questions follow about VAT, income tax and whether you may supply without a licence. Free sharing on your own property has none of those questions, as the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda found in 'Laden bij de buren'. That is why Share settles nothing, and that stays so. Your guests charge for free, and you barely notice.
