Charging at a neighbour's becomes free: ERE payment covers the electricity

Tibber and Joulo launch Joulo Share, the first charger-sharing service where nobody pays

Amsterdam, 21 September 2026Tibber and Joulo today launch Joulo Share (Joulo Deel in Dutch). Owners of a home charger can let neighbours, friends and family charge without any payment changing hands. The guest pays nothing and needs no charge card or subscription. For every shared kilowatt-hour the owner receives the ERE payment, which covers the electricity cost almost entirely.

Government scheme covers the electricity cost

Since 1 January 2026, every kilowatt-hour (kWh) charged at home through a MID-certified meter earns an Emission Reduction Unit (ERE). Fuel suppliers buy these units to meet their legal obligation. For the charger owner this is worth around 16 cents per kWh. Joulo charges no service fee on shared electricity, so the full amount goes to the owner.

On a dynamic energy contract, the daytime electricity price regularly falls below those 16 cents, especially on sunny days. In those hours a guest session costs the owner nothing. In more expensive hours the owner pays the difference: on average around one euro for a typical 12 kWh session. The same session at a public charge point costs around 5.50 euros.

A home charger sits idle 18 to 20 hours a day

A Joulo measurement across 11,575 home chargers shows that a home charger is free for 18 to 20 hours a day. On weekdays between 10:00 and 16:00 it sits unused nine minutes out of ten. At the same time, many EV drivers without a driveway depend on public charge points. Joulo Share brings the two together. The owner invites someone they know through the Joulo app. The guest creates a free Joulo account, taps in the app that they are charging and plugs in. The owner sees in the app which hours are cheapest and switches Share on or off whenever it suits them.

Not everyone with an electric car has a driveway. At the same time, most home chargers sit idle during the day. Exactly when electricity is cheapest. With Joulo Share you help someone close to you charge, at a time when it costs you next to nothing. That makes charging through your own network simpler, more accessible and smarter.

Anton Westra, Energy Market Lead at Tibber Netherlands

Sharing a charger should be as simple as inviting someone round for a coffee. No payment request is needed. The ERE payment covers the electricity, and that makes sharing the obvious thing to do.

Availability

Joulo Share is available to Tibber customers with a dynamic energy contract and a home charger with a factory-fitted MID-certified meter. The guest needs no Tibber contract, only a free Joulo account and an invitation from the owner. The service is intended for people who know each other.

Facts and figures

The numbers behind the release

How it works

Invite, plug in, done

The owner

  1. 1.Switches Share on in the Joulo app or dashboard.
  2. 2.Invites someone they know, with a code or a link.
  3. 3.Sees in the app which hours power sits below the ERE, and switches Share off whenever it suits.

The guest

  1. 1.Creates a free Joulo account and uses the invitation.
  2. 2.Taps 'I'm charging now' in the app and plugs in.
  3. 3.Pays nothing. No charge card, no subscription, no payment request.

The maths

What a guest session costs the owner

A guest usually charges about 12 kWh. The owner pays their own electricity price and gets the gross ERE payment back. Three moments, worked out with today's ERE payment.

MomentAll-in power priceOwner's balance per 12 kWh
Sunny weekday, 10:00 to 16:00, dynamic contract€0.09 / kWh+ €0.67
Daily average, dynamic contract€0.16 / kWh- €0.17
Fixed tariff€0.25 / kWh- €1.25

A positive balance is what the owner keeps, a negative one is what they add. Across good and ordinary moments a guest session costs about a euro on average.
